I have been waiting a couple of weeks to hear the results of my genetics testing. The fact that it has only taken a couple of weeks, is nothing short of miraculous - that was even verified today as I talked with the genetic counsellor. My oncologists in Ontario want these results before we meet on Friday to start the process for radiation. Normally it would take at least 3 months in BC for these results - but the team, bridging Ontario and BC - made a plan and it was sent out and sped up ( to two weeks!) to accommodate!
So, the result came back saying I have no mutations in the BRCA 1 or 2 gene. This will be verified again in 3 weeks as they run tests for 7 more genes plus these two again. That's good news - it means at this point, at least, there doesn't appear to be this particular hereditary component to my breast cancer...it could be other, yet unknown or undiscovered genes, the genetics counsellor said, but for right now, I am going for an 'all clear' on the genetics front.
There is now just a bone scan July 2 and the second half of the genetics test around mid July to wait for...I am not going pretend this testing and waiting for results is easy - it's not! It may be one of the trickiest parts of this journey. However, today, again, we can breath a little easier, and move forward with our hope in tact!
